Every year on October 15, Rwanda joins the rest of the world in celebrating the International Day of Rural Women. This year, the event was celebrated in the Southern Province, Nyamagabe District, Gatare Sector, under the theme “Nature is Us!”
The Minister of Gender and Family Promotion Uwimana Consolée reminded those who attended the event that rural women still face many challenges that lead to environmental degradation, and solutions need to be found for these issues.
“As we know, rural women have many responsibilities, and sometimes face challenges that harm the environment. They are therefore required to play a role in its protection. We still have many households that use firewood, especially those led by women. Rural women are still burdened with many household chores, which are considered unpaid work.” She said.
Minister Uwimana asked the family members to share household cores for a woman to be able to do other activities that generate income
“I would like to ask all family members—the husband, and the children—to help the woman in the household. It shouldn’t be surprising to see a woman cooking while the husband washes the dishes. Let’s consider this as something normal.”
